The goal of this
project at the Univ. of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

is to develop a new class of widely applicable
passive and active radar imaging algorithms and associated theory from
first-principles, using state-of-the-art physics-based modeling,
advanced statistical inference techniques, and recent advances in
computational methods and hardware.
Although the techniques being developed may be applicable to a wide variety of
scenarios and sensor technologies, our efforts are focused on the
passive detection, tracking, imaging, and recognition
of aircraft from reflected commercial television and
radio signals.

The project consists of members of the
Digital Signal Processing Group at the
Coordinated Science Laboratory, the
Image Formation and Processing Group
at the
Beckman Institute,
and the
Center for
Computational Electromagnetics
.

We collaborate with the
Silent Sentry
passive radar team at
Lockheed Martin
Mission Systems
in
Gaithersburg, MD. Lockheed Martin is an unfunded/unfunding partner.

This work is sponsored by
DARPA Contract F49620-98-1-0498,
administered by AFOSR.
Dr. Doug Cochran
of DARPA’s
Defense Sciences
Office
is our current program monitor. He took over for
Dr.
Dennis Healy, who is now with the
Univ. of Maryland Math Department.
